How to Make Your Dumb Devices Smart
This week I will talk about a physical product, a chrome extension, a web tool & a website.
1. Switch Bot
Switch bot is the easiest way to turn any device in your home that has an on/off switch into a smart device. It's a very simple device that does one thing, it pushes a button or a switch. For example, you can stick it to your coffee machine and make it press the ON button from your smartphone when you wake up in the morning. It’s a much cheaper alternative than buying or replacing your old and not so smart devices with new so-called smart devices.
2. One Tab
If you are like me, and by the end of the day find yourself dealing with hundreds of tabs on your browser then OneTab is for you. It’s a lightweight chrome extension that will consolidate all your tabs into “one tab”. Click the OneTab icon to convert all of your tabs into a list, when you need to access the tabs again, you can either restore them individually or all at once. Apart from keeping your browser tidy, it also helps in reducing memory usage of your computer. Trust me, Marie Kondo would be amazed, looking at your clean and decluttered browser.
I was talking to a friend a few weeks back where he mentioned, how hard it is to keep track of job applications and how there is a gap or opportunity in the market to build a CRM for job applicants. After our conversation, I did some research and found Huntr. Yes, you guessed it right it is exactly the kind of tool that my friend was hoping someone builds. It’s a tool to keep track of all your applications in one place, so you don't miss that critical phone screen. Huntr also provides a chrome extension that will pop up when you are looking at a job and by a click of a button that job gets saved to your Huntr board. If you are job hunting then go and check out Huntr.
While reading the news on the wildfires in the west coast of the USA, I stumbled upon this website named FIRMS from NASA. The website provides a near real-time map of all the actives fires around the world. According to the website, they distribute the data within the 3 hours of satellite observation. You will be amazed at how many fires are active at a given time around the world. Seems, the world is always on fire.
